Why Carbon & Sulfur Testing Matters
In flight-critical and high-pressure systems, carbon affects heat-treat response, hardness, and fatigue life, while sulfur influences inclusion formation, corrosion behavior, and cracking susceptibility. Precise C/S verification helps you:
- Confirm melt/heat chemistry before machining or release.
- Validate weld procedures and overlays against code or drawing limits.
- Control sour-service (H₂S/CO₂) risk in pipelines, valves, and pressure equipment.
- Support MRB dispositions with clear, defensible data.
AADFW’s Approach: Precision, Speed, and Proof
- Accredited & precise: Testing inside an ISO/IEC 17025 quality system using certified reference materials, matrix-matched calibration, and documented uncertainty.
- Faster results: Streamlined scheduling, disciplined method control, and concise reporting compress lead times without sacrificing rigor.
- Trusted by industry: Aerospace and oil & gas engineers rely on our clear acceptance criteria, traceability, and metallurgical context—data that stands up to audits and primes.
Carbon & Sulfur by Combustion—What We Test and How We Do It
- Method: We use high-temperature combustion in an oxygen environment with infrared (IR) detection of CO₂ (carbon monoxide) to determine the carbon content and SO₂ (sulfur oxide) to determine the sulfur content..
- Matrices: Our instruments have different matrices that allow them to test different alloys such as low-alloy carbon steels, stainless steels, titanium alloys, cast iron alloys, and copper alloys.
- Ranges & Sensitivity: ppm to percent levels (instrument- and matrix-specific), with duplicates/control samples for lot confidence.
- QA Controls: Daily drift checks, CRMs across the working range, blanks, and control charts included in the quality records.
- Reporting: Unit reported clearly, including (ppm/%), method notes, calibration/QA summary, and call-outs vs. spec limits when provided.
Service Capabilities (Technical Scope)
- C/S Heat Lot Verification – Confirm melt chemistry prior to machining, heat treat, or shipment.
- Weld & Overlay C/S Limits – Verify filler/base/dilution chemistry for WPS/PQR/WPQ or production lots.
- Sour-Service Screening (S) – Control sulfur for NACE/ISO/ASME expectations in pipelines and pressure components.
- Failure/Quality Investigations – Elevated C/S flags process or material issues; optional OES/EDS, metallography, and failure analysis available.
- Sampling & Prep – Solid coupons or clean chips/turnings; controlled machining, degreasing, and traceability to heat/furnace/part. We need solid coupons or clean chip/turnings. Cleaning or machining samples may add time and cost to obtain accurate results.
Industries We Support
- Aerospace: AMS/ASTM chemistry confirmation, weld procedure support, and lot release for flight hardware.
- Oil & Gas: PMI and C/S control for pipe/tubulars, valves, wellhead, and sour-service applications.
- Defense & Advanced Manufacturing: Mission-critical parts where toughness and cleanliness demand tight C/S limits. Trusted by engineers and QC managers across mission-critical industries.
- Manufacturing: Chemical composition identification or validation is possible if necessary.
Accreditations & Standards Compliance
AADFW operates to ISO/IEC 17025 with traceable calibrations and uncertainty statements. Our C/S combustion work supports Nadcap-driven program requirements and applicable ASTM/ISO/ASME/AMS chemistry specifications. Reports are audit-ready, with calibration references and QC results available upon request.
How to Get the Best C/S Results (Engineer’s Quick Guide)
- Avoid contamination: Provide oil-free, coating-free surfaces; we’ll prep to method requirements.
- Tell us the alloy & spec limits: We’ll select calibration ranges and QC to match your composition and decision thresholds.
- Indicate the location: Base metal vs. weld metal/overlay—we’ll sample accordingly and note dilution concerns.
- Bundle services when needed: Pair C/S with OES (grade/trace elements), O/N/H fusion (interstitials), or metallography for a complete picture. Send different samples for different tests, if possible. This will account for the different tests for different samples processed simultaneously. Let us know which sample is for which test.
Why Engineers Choose AADFW
- Accredited & precise combustion methods with CRMs and control charts.
- Faster turnaround—keep gates and MRB actions on schedule.
- Trusted partner to aerospace and oil & gas QA organizations.
- Expert metallurgists who translate numbers into clear go/no-go decisions, and investigate when something’s off.
